British motorists can secure £3,750 off 14 brand new electric cars under a new scheme introduced by Labour. The Electric Car Grant offers a discount of up to £3,750 on brand-new, electric zero-emission models priced at £37,000 or lower. The discount comes in one of two bands, with a cheaper £1,500 offer for certain qualifying models such as the Hyundai Kona and Volkswagen ID.3. But the higher top band offers up to £3,750 off cars, although vehicles qualifying for the scheme must meet certain crucial criteria.
How the Grant Works
To get the full cash allocation, models must meet the highest manufacturing sustainability standards, with just 14 models available in the UK eligible for the maximum benefit. Buyers don’t need to do anything to take advantage of the scheme, with the Electric Car Grant discounts applied automatically by dealerships. The benefit has slashed costs by thousands, with the Fiat 500e now available for just £17,000 as a result of the discount.
Ford and Nissan Models Included
Ford customers can also take advantage of the discount, with offers available on the Puma Gen-E and E-Tourneo Courier. Two Nissan cars are also available for the discount, with customers securing brand new Leaf and Micra vehicles also eligible for savings.
Renault Leads with Three Models
However, Renault is the biggest benefactor of the scheme, with three models available for savings. Customers opting for either a Renault 4, Renault 5 Comfort Range or Renault Scenic are all able to qualify for the £3,750 price cut.
Government Funding and Timeline
The Government has allocated £650m for the scheme, meaning that the grant could subsidise a whopping 173,000 electric cars at the full £3,750 discount. The Electric Car Grant is scheduled to run until the end of March 2029, meaning road users still have time to cash in on the savings.
