UK Pub Firm Roast and Brew Collapses Into Liquidation – Historic 1673 Building Affected
UK Pub Firm Roast and Brew Collapses Into Liquidation

A UK pub company has officially collapsed into liquidation. Roast and Brew Pub Co. Ltd., which was incorporated on November 24, 2023, according to Companies House, has appointed liquidators as it winds up its operations. The firm's registered office is located at the same address as the Malt Shovel pub in Dartford, Kent.

Liquidation Details

On Thursday, June 4, a general meeting of the company's members was convened at Sheraton House in Stockton-on-Tees. During the meeting, it was resolved that the business would be wound up voluntarily. Ian Royle and David Broadbent, both of BTG Begbies Traynor, were appointed as joint liquidators. The resolutions for winding up were officially published today, Friday, June 12, alongside the appointment of the liquidators.

The exact implications of the liquidation for the Malt Shovel pub remain unclear. The Express has contacted the pub for comment but has not yet received a response.

The Historic Malt Shovel

The Malt Shovel, a classic English country pub dating back to 1673, describes itself on its website as “the archetype of a classic country pub, but is located only a stone's throw from Dartford town centre.” It offers an impressive range of cask and keg beers, wines, spirits, and traditional pub food. The pub also hosts live entertainment and provides facilities for private hire and functions. Well-behaved dogs are welcome both indoors and outdoors.

According to the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), the pub features two bars: a low-ceilinged tap room with an 1880s Dartford Brewery mirror and a larger bar leading to a conservatory where meals are served from Thursday to Sunday. A large beer garden extends from the conservatory, with the Fastrack 'B' bus stopping just across the road. Summer barbecues are held in the garden, and regular events include an open quiz on Monday evenings, crib night on Tuesdays, and a jazz jam on the first Wednesday of each month. A small car park is adjacent to the pub.

Current Operations

Despite the liquidation, the Malt Shovel appears to be continuing operations. A recent post on its Facebook page reads: “We're all set for the World Cup! Join us in the tap room for all the action (no, not the 3am ones...) and maybe even in the conservatory as well if there's an England game on!”

The pub industry in the UK has been facing significant challenges, with rising costs and changing consumer habits putting pressure on many establishments. The collapse of Roast and Brew Pub Co. Ltd. adds to a growing list of hospitality businesses struggling in the current economic climate.
