During a speech at a General Motors facility in Michigan, President Donald Trump announced the White House had ordered 250 new Cadillac Escalades, luxury SUVs with a suggested retail price of more than $90,000 each. The fleet, which costs significantly more to customize for secure uses, was touted by Trump as a way to “look sharp in those cavalcades.”
The announcement came as Americans face a deepening affordability crisis. Gas prices have risen almost a dollar per gallon since Trump took office, mortgage rates hit their highest level in nearly a year, and a prominent economist estimated the Iran war costs the average U.S. household more than $1,200.
Trump’s Michigan Speech Veers Into Culture Wars
The speech, intended to focus on U.S. auto manufacturing, instead touched on transgender rights, “Marxist protesters,” and a warning that if Democrats win control of government, “In one year, the country will be absolutely bankrupt.” Trump also described himself as “sort of a clean freak.”
He claimed to have been awarded “man of the year” in Michigan 25 years ago. CNN’s Daniel Dale noted that Trump has repeated this claim for a decade without evidence, and the state of Michigan does not give out such an award.
Critics highlighted the symbolism of the luxury purchase. The Angry Staffer account on X wrote, “Hey I know inflation is out of control and a lot of folks can’t afford basic necessities, but at least we’re tackling waste fraud and abuse by buying… *checks notes* 250 Escalades for the government.”
Trump’s display of opulence—including a possible armored version costing over $300,000 each—contrasts with the struggles of everyday Americans. The cost of the fleet, at least $22 million, is unlikely to boost morale as many face inflation and high living costs.
