Sunderland are reportedly showing an interest in signing Aston Villa midfielder Lamare Bogarde this summer, as the club prepares for the possible departure of captain Granit Xhaka. The Black Cats are said to be facing competition from Brighton for the 22-year-old's signature, with both clubs willing to pay a "substantial fee," according to Dutch outlet Voetbal International.
Xhaka's Future at Sunderland Uncertain
Reports emerged over the weekend that Chelsea are targeting Xhaka, potentially ending his stint at the Stadium of Light after just one season. However, Chronicle Live understands that Sunderland have yet to receive an approach from Chelsea. Sky Sports also reported that the Black Cats have no plans to let Xhaka leave this summer. Despite this, Sunderland appear to be lining up a replacement in Bogarde.
Bogarde's Impressive Season at Aston Villa
Bogarde made 44 appearances for Villa last season, helping them finish fourth in the Premier League and win the Europa League title. He featured 13 times in the Europa League, though he was an unused substitute in the final where Villa defeated Freiburg 3-0. The Dutch midfielder's performances have attracted interest from several clubs, with Sunderland now joining the race.
Sunderland's European Ambitions
Regis Le Bris' side finished seventh in their first season back in the Premier League, securing a spot in the Europa League. The club is now looking to strengthen its squad to cope with the demands of European football. Losing Xhaka would be a blow, but the potential arrival of Bogarde could provide a fresh boost.
