Italian giants Roma are set to lodge an opening bid for former Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood after reportedly agreeing personal terms with the player. The 24-year-old is expected to leave Marseille this summer following two seasons in Ligue 1, where he has scored 48 goals in 81 appearances since joining from United for £26.7 million.
Roma's Opening Bid and Personal Terms
According to Sky Italia, Roma are readying an opening offer of around €45 million (£38.5 million) including bonuses and a sell-on clause. An agreement on personal terms has already been reached with Greenwood's camp, and should a fee be agreed, he would sign a five-year contract at the Stadio Olimpico.
However, Marseille are holding out for a higher fee, reportedly seeking around €55 million but open to negotiation. Roma's bid is expected to be submitted imminently.
Greenwood's Future and International Allegiance
Greenwood had previously hinted at staying with Marseille, saying at the Ligue 1 awards ceremony: "This season has been difficult at times for us as a team, especially in the last few months. But, individually, I think I've had a good season. I hope I will be able to stay put here."
With his club future nearing resolution, Greenwood's international status remains uncertain. England manager Thomas Tuchel confirmed earlier this year that Greenwood was no longer being considered for the national team. Tuchel stated: "I have not spoken to him or his camp. My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn't give it another thought."
Former Jamaica boss Steve McClaren added: "We acquired a passport and we expected him to be coming to this camp. But in a conversation with his family, he's not going to commit at this time to anybody. He wants to concentrate on club football."
Background and Legal Context
Greenwood joined Marseille from Manchester United in 2023 after charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour were dropped. Since then, he has revitalised his career in France, becoming a key player for the Ligue 1 side. His potential move to Roma marks a return to top-tier European football in Serie A.
