Newcastle United believe Arsenal remain the frontrunners to secure the signing of Sandro Tonali and are expecting an offer from the Premier League champions, according to reports. Tottenham have also shown interest, but Newcastle suspect their approach is designed to prompt a bid from Arsenal.
Interest from Multiple Clubs
Tonali has attracted attention from several Premier League clubs this summer, including Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United, and Manchester City. Arsenal explored a deal in the January window but were rebuffed by Newcastle.
According to The Telegraph, Newcastle's hierarchy have long considered Arsenal favourites to land the Italian midfielder and are bracing for a bid in the summer window.
Tottenham's Approach
Spurs have contacted Tonali's representatives to discuss a move to Roberto De Zerbi's side but have not yet opened formal talks with Newcastle. De Zerbi, a long-time admirer of Tonali, has previously expressed his desire to sign him.
"I wanted to bring Tonali to Sassuolo, if I'd stayed, after his first year at AC Milan," De Zerbi said during his time at Brighton. "I saw him at Brescia and thought he was the player he proved to be."
Newcastle's Asking Price
Newcastle are expected to demand a £100 million transfer fee for Tonali, who joined from AC Milan for £55 million three years ago. The club has informed Tonali's representatives that they will not sell unless the asking price is met.
Manchester United, meanwhile, have indicated they will not submit an offer due to the high transfer fee and wage demands.
