Newcastle United have confirmed the permanent departure of midfielder Joe White, who has joined League Two side Crewe Alexandra on a two-year deal. The 23-year-old, who spent a decade at the club after joining the academy in 2016, made four first-team appearances for the Magpies under Eddie Howe during the 2023/24 season but failed to establish himself in the senior squad.
Loan spells and previous success at Crewe
White spent last season on loan in League One with Leyton Orient and Bradford City, but struggled to make an impact at either club. However, he enjoyed a successful previous loan spell with Crewe in the first half of the 2023/24 season, scoring three goals in 25 appearances. He also had loan stints with MK Dons, Exeter City and Hartlepool United during his time at Newcastle.
White is expected to go straight into the Crewe squad for their pre-season friendly against Stoke City on Saturday. A Newcastle club statement read: "Everybody at Newcastle United would like to wish Joe well for the future."
Premier League debut and emotional farewell
Reflecting on his Premier League debut for Newcastle in a 2-2 draw with Bournemouth in 2024, White said: "It's something you look at others getting when they make their Premier League debuts and what I've wanted to do since joining the club at the age of 13. To finally do it was the ultimate dream for me.
"I've got my family to thank during my school years for bringing me over for training and matches. They have been a massive part in getting me to this stage but to come through and do it with lads I've played with before in Newcastle's Academy was special.
"It's one thing making your debut but I felt coming on when the game was still in the balance was even better. When we scored, we tried to get a third to win the game but, to pull one back as soon I came on, my mind was blown trying to take it all in. You always want to do it at home and to come on in front of the St. James' crowd was amazing."
Crewe's ambitions and White's role
Crewe Alexandra, managed by Lee Bell, finished 11th in League Two last season. White will now link up with the Alex squad as they prepare for the upcoming campaign. The midfielder's permanent move marks the end of his long association with Newcastle, where he progressed through the ranks from the age of 13.
