Newcastle Confirm £100m Tonali Transfer to Spurs

Sandro Tonali has sealed a permanent move to Tottenham Hotspur for a fee understood to be in the region of £100m, Newcastle United have confirmed. The Italy international departs St James' Park after three years, having cited family reasons for his decision to relocate to London.

Club Statement Confirms Historic Fee

Newcastle United released an official statement on Monday confirming the transfer. The club described the undisclosed fee as the second largest ever received for a player in Newcastle United's history. Tonali leaves having made 110 appearances for the Magpies, scoring ten goals across all competitions.

The 26-year-old joined from AC Milan in the summer of 2023 and played an instrumental role in the club's Carabao Cup triumph in March 2025. He featured 53 times last season, including 11 appearances in the UEFA Champions League.

“Everybody at Newcastle United thanks Sandro for his contribution to the club and wishes him and his family well for the future,” the statement read.

Tonali Cites Family and De Zerbi Influence

Speaking to reporters at Milan's airport, Tonali expressed his satisfaction with the move. “Absolutely. We've decided to make a change, so we're ready for this new adventure,” he said. “Newcastle wanted the best for me and we wanted the best deal for them. So I think that once you go like this it is different, so we are all happy and I am ready for the new challenge.”

When asked why he chose Spurs, Tonali credited manager Roberto De Zerbi. “Let's say Roberto De Zerbi had a big percentage in this, and for a life choice, we come from Newcastle and our lives change with our child's birth. So we decided to change a bit. De Zerbi made a great difference and did the job very well.”

Newcastle to Reinvest Funds

The Magpies are expected to plough the proceeds from Tonali's sale back into the squad. They have already spent part of the fee on Bazoumana Touré, a new signing. Tonali's agent Giuseppe Riso approached several clubs earlier this month, including Arsenal, Manchester City, and Tottenham, before the latter secured the deal.
