Morgan Rogers is undergoing his medical at Chelsea ahead of a blockbuster £117 million transfer from Aston Villa. The 23-year-old England international was filmed by Sky Sports arriving for tests on Monday after returning from the World Cup in the United States, where England secured a dramatic 6-4 victory over France in the third-place play-off.
Contract and Record-Breaking Fee
Rogers is expected to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge lasting until the summer of 2032, with Chelsea holding an option to extend by a further 12 months. The deal makes him the most expensive British player in football history, surpassing England teammate Elliot Anderson, who left Nottingham Forest for Manchester City in a £116m deal earlier this month. The previous record was held by Declan Rice, who cost £105m when he moved from West Ham to Arsenal in the summer of 2023.
Rogers also becomes Chelsea’s new club-record signing, exceeding the £107m paid for Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in January 2023. Only Alexander Isak, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle for £125m last summer, cost more in Premier League history.
Statement Signing and Competition with Arsenal
The transfer represents a major statement from Chelsea as they begin a new managerial era under Xabi Alonso. Arsenal had made Rogers their top transfer priority this window, but Chelsea’s long-standing interest—Rogers was previously on Manchester City’s books—allowed them to swoop quickly and beat their London rivals. Middlesbrough, his former club, will receive over £20m due to a sell-on clause.
Despite his status as a top-level No.10, Rogers is expected to play regularly on the left wing under Alonso, with Cole Palmer deployed through the middle. Talks with Alonso were key to Rogers’ decision to join.
Other Chelsea Transfers
Rogers’ arrival follows that of Italy right-back Marco Palestra, who joined from Atalanta for £47m at the beginning of July. Portuguese winger Geovany Quenda also arrived via a £40m deal agreed with Sporting last year, and striker Emmanuel Emegha signed a pre-contract agreement to join from sister club Strasbourg this summer. Emegha reportedly scored on his debut in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Cobham, where Chelsea beat League Two side Crawley 3-1 in Alonso’s first game in charge.
Other summer arrivals include Kazakh wonderkid Dastan Satpaev. Chelsea have been in talks with Rayo Vallecano over left-back Pep Chavarria, after agreeing to sell World Cup winner Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for £51.7m. Sales also include Andrey Santos to Manchester United for £50m and Tyrique George to Everton for £24m. Chelsea are also pushing to sign France centre-back Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace.
