Michael Edwards has resigned from his role as chief executive of football for Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), leaving the American ownership group with mounting leadership challenges.
Edwards, who previously served as Liverpool's sporting director, returned to a more senior position two years ago after Jurgen Klopp's departure, tasked with developing a multi-club operation for FSG. However, those plans were shelved late last year, and Edwards soon expressed his desire to leave. Attempts to persuade him to stay ultimately failed.
Leadership uncertainty at FSG
Edwards' departure comes amid speculation that current sporting director Richard Hughes is linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, adding further pressure on FSG to address leadership gaps. FSG president Mike Gordon will now reassume greater day-to-day control of Liverpool.
In a statement, Edwards said: "It has been a privilege to return to Fenway Sports Group and Liverpool Football Club at such an important moment. I leave believing Liverpool is in a strong position, with outstanding people, a clear direction and the foundations in place for continued success."
Edwards' legacy at Liverpool
Edwards was instrumental in bringing Jurgen Klopp to Liverpool and played a key role in the club's recent success, including their historic English league title win. He leaves with one year remaining on his contract.
FSG president Gordon praised Edwards' "extraordinary contribution," stating: "When Michael returned in 2024, he did so at a pivotal moment for Liverpool, embracing a broader leadership role across our football interests. Throughout both periods he has consistently demonstrated exceptional judgement, integrity and an unwavering commitment to building a strong football organisation for the long term."
Gordon added: "While we are naturally disappointed to see him leave, we will always be grateful for everything he has given. On behalf of John Henry, Tom Werner and everyone at Fenway Sports Group, I would like to thank Michael for his outstanding service, friendship and leadership, and wish him and his family every success and happiness in the future."
