The Railway pub on Bridge Road in Litherland has announced its closure with 'great sadness,' leaving locals 'gutted.' The venue, part of Admiral Taverns' 'Proper Pubs' division, shut its doors over the weekend until new management is found.

Writing on Facebook, the team behind the pub said: 'It is with great sadness that we announce that the pub is now closed until further notice, until new management will takeover. This has not been an easy decision, but it is one that has been made jointly between ourselves and Proper Pubs.' They added: 'We would like to thank each and every one of you for your incredible support, loyalty, and friendship over the past almost two years. It has been a privilege to serve you and be part of the community. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all the memories. We wish you all the very best for the future. Goodbye, and thank you all.'
Refurbishment and Recent History
The pub had reopened in October 2024 following a £262,000 makeover, with bar operators Jamie Leicester and Gareth Furness at its helm. The refurbishment included a full internal and external transformation, with updates to the bar area, new furniture, fixtures, fittings, and flooring throughout. Outside, the pub was repainted and featured new lighting and signs.
Offerings and Entertainment
The Railway offered a wide range of drinks promotions, including 'Wine Wednesday' with £2 off a bottle, 'Fizz Friday' offering a bottle of fizz for £10, along with cocktails, bottle, and shot deals throughout the week. The pub also ran a busy schedule of entertainment, including regular karaoke, live music, weekly quiz and bingo nights, DJ sets, and hosted regular pool and darts teams.
Future Plans and Management Recruitment
A spokesperson for Proper Pubs told the Liverpool ECHO: 'Unfortunately due to events out of their control, the operator and Proper Pubs have had to take the decision to close the Railway Hotel. Following the departure of the operator, Proper Pubs is currently recruiting for a new operator to run the pub and are hoping to reopen as soon as possible in coming days.'
