Andre Onana's season-long loan move to Trabzonspor is set to be announced within the next 24 hours, after the goalkeeper signed paperwork to finalise the deal on Thursday afternoon. The 30-year-old returns to the Turkish Super Lig side following a successful loan spell last season, which ended with a domestic cup victory and Europa League qualification.
Fee and Wage Structure
Manchester United could receive a fee of up to €1.5 million (£1.28 million) from Trabzonspor, though this amount depends on certain performance-related bonuses. These include Trabzonspor winning the domestic league or qualifying for the Champions League. The Turkish club will also cover the majority of Onana's wages, with United hopeful that if some clauses are met, the deal will eventually result in full wage coverage for the season.
Loan Details and Contract
The deal is a straight loan with no option or obligation to buy, meaning Onana will return to Old Trafford next summer with one year remaining on his contract. He joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 for £47 million.
Onana's Decision to Leave
Onana wanted to return to United and fight for his place this season after his successful loan at Trabzonspor. However, United's hierarchy informed his camp that he would not be able to dislodge No. 1 goalkeeper Senne Lammens. There was also a view that he would not be suitable as a No. 2 and was on too high wages for that role. With no option to stay in Manchester, his priority became returning to a club where he felt welcomed and had enjoyed success.
