Manchester United have confirmed that goalkeeper Andre Onana will spend the 2026-27 season on loan at Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor, marking his second consecutive temporary spell at the club. The 30-year-old Cameroon international, who was United's first-choice goalkeeper upon his arrival, was loaned to Trabzonspor last summer after a turbulent two-year period at Old Trafford.
Onana's Departure and United's Goalkeeping Situation
Ruben Amorim installed Senne Lammens as United's first-choice goalkeeper in October 2025, a role he has held ever since. With the club moving on from Onana, it became clear that the former Inter Milan shot-stopper's future lay away from Manchester. However, a permanent exit has not been agreed for the 30-year-old, who still has one year remaining on his United contract after the loan ends.
Loan Details and Financial Clauses
According to MEN Sport, Onana signed the paperwork to rejoin Trabzonspor on Thursday, where he made 40 appearances last season. The deal was agreed a week earlier but official confirmation was delayed as Onana was on holiday. United are hoping to receive a fee of up to €1.5 million (£1.28 million) from the Turkish club, dependent on certain clauses being met, such as Trabzonspor winning the domestic league or qualifying for the Champions League. The Turkish club are also agreeing to cover the majority of Onana's wages, with the possibility of covering his full wage if the clauses are activated.
No Purchase Option
Unlike previous loan moves, Onana's return to Trabzonspor is a straight loan deal with no option to purchase the player in 2027. When he returns to Old Trafford at the end of next season, the goalkeeper will have one more year remaining on his United deal.
Club Statement
Confirming Onana's departure, Manchester United wrote: "Everyone at United wishes Andre the best of luck for the campaign ahead." The loan is subject to international clearance and registration.
