Man United Greenlit to Sign Ex-Premier League Midfielder Dani Ceballos for Free
Man United Can Sign Dani Ceballos for Free

Manchester United have received the green light to sign former Arsenal midfielder Dani Ceballos on a free transfer, as the Real Madrid star enters the summer as a free agent. The 29-year-old is no longer part of Jose Mourinho's plans at the Santiago Bernabeu, with reports indicating a "new chapter" is set to begin for the Spain international.

Midfield Overhaul at Old Trafford

United have made it clear they will prioritise strengthening their midfield this summer, given the number of exits on the cards. Casemiro has departed Old Trafford following the end of his contract, while Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount are both linked with departures. Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo appear to be the foundation that manager Michael Carrick will build upon in the middle of the park.

Ederson is set to join United after the World Cup concludes, with Sandro Tonali, Aurelien Tchouameni, Martin Baturina, and Ayyoub Bouaddi all linked with moves. However, many of these targets command high fees: Tonali would cost at least £80 million, and Tchouameni's asking price has risen to £87 million.

Ceballos: A Cost-Effective Option

In contrast, Ceballos is available as a free agent and would likely not command the same wages as his former Madrid teammate Casemiro, who earned £350,000-a-week during his time at Old Trafford. Ceballos recently earned around £4.3 million a year at Madrid, equating to approximately £85,000-a-week, the same as Diogo Dalot currently earns at United.

According to reports, getting Casemiro's huge salary off the books is welcome news for the club, who do not plan to sign a contract as lucrative in the near future. Ceballos has been extremely successful with Madrid, making 215 appearances and securing 15 major trophies, including three Champions League titles.

Impact on Transfer Budget

If United do opt to sign Ceballos, the rest of the midfield budget can be centred around more expensive targets. £60 million-rated Mateus Fernandes from West Ham is on the wishlist, with the player reportedly keen on a move to Old Trafford. World Cup star Martin Baturina is another playmaker Carrick is interested in, with Sky Italia claiming that Aston Villa are also keen on the Croatia international.
