Manchester United began their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Wrexham in Helsinki, Finland. The match marked Michael Carrick's first game as the club's permanent head coach, following a successful second spell as caretaker last season.
First-Half Goal Decides Match
Wrexham took the lead just before half-time through Sam Smith. The former Reading striker tapped home from close range after Lewis O'Brien raced down the left flank, reached the byline, and fired a low cross across the six-yard box. United's centre-backs Ayden Heaven and Harry Maguire were caught napping, leaving Smith unmarked to prod past goalkeeper Tom Heaton.
New Signing Andrey Santos Makes Debut
Andrey Santos, United's £48 million summer signing from Chelsea, made his first start for the club. He played alongside Mason Mount in the double pivot of Carrick's 4-2-3-1 formation but had a quiet first 45 minutes. Other new arrivals, including Youri Tielemans (£35m) and Karl Darlow, were not in the squad. Tielemans was given extra time off after World Cup commitments, while Darlow underwent minor surgery for an undisclosed injury. Benjamin Sesko also stayed behind due to a shin injury that ended his previous season early. The club insists all three will be fit for the start of the league campaign.
Mixed Performance from United
United fielded a mix of first-team regulars and younger players in the first half, including Leny Yoro, Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire, Mason Mount, Bryan Mbeumo, and Patrick Dorgu. However, they struggled to create significant chances. A completely fresh XI of Under-21 and Under-18 prospects played the second half but failed to change the outcome. Carrick is unlikely to be pleased with the overall performance, as United finished third in the Premier League last season under his guidance.
Next Pre-Season Fixture
United will continue their pre-season preparations with a match against Rosenborg in Trondheim, Norway. More will be expected as the squad gains fitness and integrates new signings.
