Twelve months ago, Rio Ngumoha was preparing for the biggest summer of his life. Set to be called up to Liverpool's pre-season tour of Hong Kong and Japan, the then 16-year-old seized his opportunity. He stepped up from academy football to train with Premier League champions, handling the transition with aplomb.
During an open training session in Tokyo, Andy Robertson helped assimilate the teenager into the group with gentle teasing during rondos. Ngumoha then scored a stunning goal in a victory over Yokohama F Marinos and ended pre-season with his third goal of the summer against Athletic Club at Anfield.
First Premier League Goal
Ngumoha netted his first Premier League goal in dramatic fashion, scoring the winner in the 100th minute at St James' Park against Newcastle United. That goal came just days before his 17th birthday, after which he signed his first senior contract with Liverpool.
He ended the season starting on the left side of attack for Arne Slot's side and was drafted into the England set-up on the eve of the World Cup. Ngumoha became one of the youngest-ever debutants for the Three Lions at 17 years and 281 days, earning a player-of-the-match award against New Zealand.
Bayern Munich Interest
His rapid progress has attracted interest from Bayern Munich, though no contact had been made as of last week. Liverpool are in no mood to negotiate a sale. With Andoni Iraola set to take over as head coach, Ngumoha is seen as a vital long-term asset.
