Liverpool Miss Out on £3.23m as Harry Wilson Joins Leeds

Liverpool are set to miss out on a potential £3.23 million windfall as Harry Wilson closes in on a move to Leeds United. The winger began his career with the Reds before joining Fulham in 2021.

Wilson's Career Path

Wilson rose through Liverpool’s academy to make two first-team appearances under Jurgen Klopp. The Wales international later signed for Fulham on an initial loan deal and subsequently completed a £12 million move to Craven Cottage. During his time with the west London club, the 29-year-old clocked up 187 appearances for Marco Silva’s team. He recently enjoyed the best season of his career so far, scoring 10 Premier League goals and registering seven assists.

Sell-On Clause Details

As part of the £12 million deal that saw him leave Anfield, Liverpool negotiated a 15 per cent sell-on clause. However, the Reds no longer stand to benefit from Wilson’s next move as he is set to leave Fulham at the end of his contract. Transfermarkt lists Wilson’s value as £21.55 million following his impressive campaign. Had Fulham been able to recoup that fee with Wilson under contract, Liverpool would have received £3.23 million.

Leeds United Agreement

The Athletic has reported that Leeds have reached an agreement to sign Wilson, who will join Daniel Farke’s side as a free agent. The midfielder is set to sign a long-term deal and will have an improved salary at Elland Road. Several Premier League clubs were linked with Wilson before he opted to join Leeds. Fulham had attempted to extend his contract, which would have allowed Liverpool to still profit from any subsequent battle for his services.

Previous Transfer Attempt

The Reds' hopes of the sell-on clause being triggered were previously dashed last summer. Leeds were interested in signing Wilson a year ago but saw a potential move collapse on deadline day. LeedsLive reported that the Yorkshire club had met Fulham’s undisclosed asking price for the winger, with Wilson also agreeing to join the newly-promoted side. However, Fulham decided against the move in the final moments of the transfer window.

While Liverpool were left to rue their missed windfall, Wilson was able to put any transfer disappointment behind him as he starred for Fulham throughout the season. He is set to sign for Leeds upon the expiry of his Fulham deal later this month and could be joined by former Liverpool target Julian Brandt, who has also been linked with a move to Elland Road.
