Liverpool have reportedly decided on their next two transfer targets, with a deal that will see Amazon founder Jeff Bezos become a shareholder edging closer.
The consortium aiming to buy a one-third stake in the club values the investment at £1.5billion. As with any new ownership, there is a willingness to invest in the playing squad immediately, but time is running out with just weeks of the transfer window remaining.
Van Dijk's rallying call
Virgil van Dijk has already urged the transfer executives to act, stating the Liverpool squad needs added quality. According to The Sun, the two players targeted this summer are Bradley Barcola and Alex Scott.
Barcola has been on Liverpool's radar for most of the summer, with the Frenchman reportedly wanting to leave Paris Saint-Germain due to a lack of starting opportunities. A five-year contract is said to have been agreed, but the fee is the sticking point, with PSG demanding around £130million.
Barcola and Scott pursuits
Liverpool are unwilling to meet that price, despite the need for attacking reinforcements. Last year, the club spent over £400m on new talent, mostly in attack, but this summer they have completed just one deal: £34.5million for Spanish winger Victor Munoz from Osasuna.
Jeremy Jacquet's move from Rennes, worth around £60m, was finalised this summer, though the deal was originally agreed in January. Liverpool are also pursuing Bournemouth's Scott, who has become one of the league's brightest talents under Andoni Iraola. However, they are reluctant to match Bournemouth's asking price of around £80m.
Time running out
The 2024/25 Premier League champions have just one pre-season friendly left before their season opener away to Newcastle. After that, they face Nottingham Forest, Ipswich Town and Fulham.
