Leeds United's Record-Breaking Signings
Leeds United have a history of making high-profile signings, with several club-record transfers during the Premier League era. The current record stands at £35 million for Georginio Rutter, signed in January 2023. As manager Daniel Farke looks to strengthen his squad this summer, chairman Paraag Marathe has hinted at pursuing 'moonshots' for elite players.
Lee Sharpe: A Manchester United Hero's Move
In August 1996, Leeds signed former Manchester United star Lee Sharpe for a joint-record £4.5 million. Sharpe had won three Premier League titles at Old Trafford but saw his playing time reduced by the emergence of the Class of '92. The move was Howard Wilkinson's final signing, but Wilkinson was sacked a month later. Sharpe made 26 league appearances and scored five goals in his first season, but injuries derailed his second campaign. He was loaned to Bradford City and later sold for £250,000.
Tomas Brolin: A World Cup Star's Struggle
Tomas Brolin arrived a year earlier, also for £4.5 million, sharing the record fee. The Swedish forward had shone at the 1994 World Cup and with Parma, winning the UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia. However, injuries limited him to 19 league appearances and four goals in his only season at Leeds. He was loaned to FC Zurich, returned to Parma, and later joined Crystal Palace before retiring at 28.
Georginio Rutter: The £35m Record
Leeds paid a club-record £35 million to sign Georginio Rutter from Hoffenheim in January 2023 to bolster their Premier League survival bid. The French forward failed to score in 11 league appearances as Leeds were relegated. In the Championship, he contributed six goals and 15 assists during the promotion push, attracting Brighton's interest. Leeds sold him for £40 million, turning a profit. Rutter has since scored 11 goals in 67 games for Brighton.
