Javier Hernandez, the all-time leading scorer for Mexico's national team, was reduced to tears after discovering he would be leaving Sevilla. The former Manchester United striker, known for his emotional nature, shared his feelings in a video message.
A Difficult Departure
Hernandez, now 38, joined Sevilla in 2019 but found limited success. In January 2020, he made the switch to MLS side LA Galaxy, effectively ending his European career. In an emotional video, he said, "I wanted to speak to you guys because the thing is about to get done, it's almost certain that I'm going to LA. It's okay, everything is perfect, it's only that, well, it's like the beginning of my retirement." He added, "We're saying goodbye to a career that we put a lot of effort on. We're going to look at the bright side, but whether we like it or not we are retiring from the European dream."
Manchester United Legacy
Hernandez arrived at Manchester United in 2010 after impressing at the World Cup in South Africa. He scored 20 goals in all competitions during his debut season, helping United win the Premier League and reach the Champions League final. Over his United career, he netted 59 goals in 157 appearances. He later had spells at Real Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, and West Ham before joining Sevilla.
International Record
For Mexico, Hernandez scored 52 goals in 109 appearances, making him the nation's all-time top scorer. His closest rival, Raul Jimenez, has 47 goals in 128 games. Jimenez scored twice at the 2026 World Cup and will lead Mexico's attack against England on Sunday.
Post-Europe Career
After leaving Europe, Hernandez scored 39 goals in 82 games for LA Galaxy before returning to his boyhood club, CD Guadalajara. He has not played since 2025 and has not officially announced his retirement.
