James Murdoch, the 53-year-old son of media mogul Rupert Murdoch, is making a significant move in the media industry by acquiring several divisions of Vox Media. The purchase, conducted through his company Lupa Systems, includes New York Magazine, the Vox Media Podcast Network, and Vox itself. This acquisition mirrors his father's legacy, as Rupert Murdoch once owned New York Magazine.
Details of the Acquisition
The deal, valued at over $300 million, represents about half of Vox Media. According to The New York Times, the transaction is expected to close within four to six weeks. James Murdoch stated in a press release, "This acquisition aligns well with our existing holdings and investments and reflects both our interest in the forward edge of culture and our deep commitment to ambitious journalism and agenda-setting conversations." He added, "It will allow us to apply new tools across the businesses we are building, adding substantial production, distribution, and editorial capability to our group."
Reactions and Future Plans
Vox Media CEO Jim Bankoff informed staff that the acquired products will form a new media company under Lupa ownership, carrying the Vox Media name. Bankoff will serve as CEO of the new company. He emphasized, "James and Kathryn Murdoch understand what we’re building, respect editorial independence, and are deeply committed to this new company’s success."
When asked by The New York Times whether he aims to differentiate himself from his father with this deal, James Murdoch responded simply, "No." He explained, "I’m just trying to build a great business," and downplayed the significance of his father's previous ownership of New York Magazine.

Last year, after a lengthy legal battle, his eldest son Lachlan Murdoch gained control of the empire. James Murdoch, who was CEO of 21st Century Fox from 2015 to 2019, stepped down from the News Corp board in 2020, citing disagreements over editorial content. He has acknowledged political disagreements with his father since his teenage years.
