Andoni Iraola says he is refusing to put a number on how many players Liverpool need in this summer's transfer window. But the head coach explained that he has no intention of losing either Alisson Becker or Alexis Mac Allister as the focus turns to adding to the squad before the new Premier League season begins.
Current signings and remaining targets
Liverpool have so far signed Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet this summer. Munoz arrived in a £34.5m deal from Osasuna last month when his release clause was triggered while Jacquet's £60m switch from Rennes was agreed in January for July 1.
The Reds remain in the market for at least one winger this window and Iraola also admitted right-back could be an area of focus, depending on Conor Bradley's recovery from a long-term knee injury.
Iraola on squad depth
"No, I think it is difficult to say a number when the market is open," Iraola said. "You have to be always open to new options to improve the squad. There are obvious situations where we need to sign players."
"A winger for example, we definitely need to sign a winger, but there are other situations where we will have to analyse what the market gives you, what is the cost, how we also see the players we have."
"We have some tricky positions where we have injured players, that we trust, but it is still not the ideal situation, so it will depend on a lot of things."
Right-back and defensive depth
"[At right-back] I think it depends on the Conor situation, at the end if you have a fully fit, healthy Conor Bradley, we are very happy, ready to go, and we would not be asking ourselves these questions," Iraola said.
"I think it is a situation that is tricky, because we trust Conor in the long term, we know, we want him to be our right back, but right now he is still a little bit far from returning, so with the centre-back, with the right-back situation, in terms of defensive depth, we are very thin right now. So I think it is a solution that we are trying to find."
Alisson and Mac Allister staying
On Alisson and Mac Allister, Iraola said: "I am very happy with the situation we have right now in the goalkeeping area, I think we have Alisson, we have Giorgi [Mamardashvili]."
"Now we are going to send Armin Pecsi [on loan], keepers that are probably are in another phase, but we have the guarantee of those keepers that already, because of different reasons also, the three of them here, Freddie Woodman, played some games last season, I think it is a guarantee for us."
"Alisson is someone also in a changing room that has lots of references, in terms of experience, I think he is someone that definitely will help us in this process of adaptation of the new signings, of the new players, the young players."
"We need the references like Virgil, Alisson, Joe Gomez, players that have been here for a long time, and I am sure we will have this help, yes."
"I think Alexis Mac Allister has been one of the best players of the club last year, has done a very good World Cup and is normal that other clubs want our best players, our good players, it always happens in other markets."
"But I want to, also as other clubs want, I want to keep my good players, probably I'm looking forward more to signing new players than the ones we have here."
