Halifax has issued an update after a customer queried the bank's future branch plans, following Lloyds Banking Group's announcement that it will close 79 branches, including 48 Halifax outlets, between June and November 2026. The bank clarified that it is not closing all branches, but some changes are necessary based on evolving customer banking habits.
Customer Inquiry Prompts Response
On social media, a customer referenced a previous Halifax advert stating no branches would close, asking if that remained true. Halifax responded: 'We understand your concern. We're not closing all branches, but some changes have been necessary based on how customers are choosing to bank. If you have any questions, please send us a direct message.'
A Lloyds Banking Group spokesperson added: 'With access to one of the biggest branch networks in the UK, alongside local banking options like our community bankers, the Post Office, PayPoint, plus our leading apps and 24/7 messaging service, we offer our customers more choice and convenience than ever before.'
Proximity of Alternative Branches
According to the group, for more than three-quarters of the 79 closing branches, another Lloyds Banking Group branch is less than a mile away. Over 90% have another outlet within five miles. The group stated it considers customer usage and alternative banking options when making decisions about its branch network.
The bank has been contacting affected customers to inform them of their options, including targeted support for vulnerable customers or those needing extra help.
