GAME, the iconic UK gaming retailer, has collapsed with nearly £16 million in debt, closing all of its 300 stores across the country. The brand, once a staple of British high streets, entered administration in April 2026 after years of financial struggles.
Debt and Administration Details
An administration report reveals that GAME owes £15.8 million, including £3.5 million to a secured creditor and £12 million to unsecured creditors. Administrators KR8 Advisory, appointed in April, stated that unsecured creditors are unlikely to receive any payment beyond a statutory prescribed part.
KR8 Advisory noted: "Based upon current estimates, it is anticipated that there may be sufficient realisations available to enable a distribution to be made to the secured creditor under its floating charge. Preferential creditors may be able to be paid the amount they are owed in full, however it is currently anticipated that there will be insufficient funds available to enable a distribution to be made to unsecured creditors."
Years of Losses and Frasers Group Involvement
GAME had been loss-making for over a decade. The company recorded a £14.2 million loss in 2014 and a £7.1 million loss in 2017. In 2017, Frasers Group acquired a minority equity interest, and in 2018 entered a collaboration agreement to provide financial and operational support. After Frasers Group gained a controlling interest in 2019, GAME posted a £43 million loss.
By September 2025, management accounts indicated insufficient cash to meet ongoing obligations. The head office landlord served a statutory demand in October 2025 for unpaid rent. Frasers Group then acquired GAME's intellectual property for cash to support the business and pay the outstanding rent.
Causes of Collapse
KR8 Advisory attributed GAME's downfall to a lack of new major console releases in the last six years, compounded by global chip shortages affecting manufacturers. "Having reviewed the company's financial and operational position, it was concluded that the business was no longer viable and would be unlikely to turn around its trading performance," the administrators said.
GAME was founded in 1990 and became a leading high street retailer for video games and consoles. It was incorporated in 2011 and began trading in March 2012 after acquiring the UK trade and assets of The GAME Group plc out of administration.
