Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne) makes a desperate plea to Betsy Swain (Sydney Martin) as the police close in on him in a new Coronation Street spoiler video. Betsy suffered a stroke after Dylan applied pressure to her neck during consensual strangulation while having sex, damaging an artery. The stroke left her with aphasia and dysarthria, affecting her ability to speak.
Dylan apologises to Betsy
When Betsy's mother, police detective Lisa Connor-Swain (Vicky Myers), discovered the cause of the stroke, she lashed out at a horrified Dylan before reporting him to the police. Initially, Dylan struggled to accept responsibility, accusing Betsy of cheating with Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey) and claiming Brody must have caused the stroke. However, in the new video, Dylan visits Betsy to apologise, telling her he is sorry and had no idea there were risks involved. He begs her not to hate him, and she says she doesn't. When he asks what he can do to make things right, a police officer arrives to take Betsy's statement, forcing Dylan to leave.
Legal consequences
Actress Sydney Martin explained to Metro that the situation is tricky because Betsy's mother is a detective who knows the law. 'It's only a recent law that's been brought in. Even with consent, if someone has been physically injured from it, he is still liable by law and could be charged,' she said. Martin added that Dylan did not intend to hurt Betsy, and the storyline highlights the dangers of strangulation during sex, which many people are unaware of.
The storyline will also explore the wider community's reaction, with some residents admitting they have engaged in similar acts without knowing the risks. 'To not pin it down as these two kids have done something so horrific, when actually it's quite normalised,' Martin said. 'It's an interesting one with the law side of it, and one that a lot of people didn't know about.'
