Darwin Nunez Set for Emotional Liverpool Return After Newcastle Links
Darwin Nunez Poised for Liverpool Return Amid Newcastle Interest

Darwin Nunez is poised to re-join Liverpool, according to sources from his homeland Uruguay. Nunez has been linked with a move to Newcastle United, after reports claimed he would be available as a free transfer.

Nunez Focused on World Cup

He is presently at the World Cup preparing for his nation's opening fixture against Saudi Arabia, which gets underway tonight at 11pm. Nevertheless, a journalist from the country has suggested he is set to make an unexpected return to Anfield.

Last summer, Nunez departed the Reds to join Saudi Arabian giants Al-Hilal in a transfer deal thought to be valued at approximately £46.3million. If he is to return to Anfield, it means Newcastle would have to look for other targets.

Uruguayan Outlet Reports Return

Carve Deportiva, a Uruguayan-based outlet, has claimed Nunez will return to Liverpool in the summer. It's also reported that Nunez remains completely focused on his country's World Cup campaign, making any transfer announcement before the tournament's conclusion highly improbable.

The former Benfica forward is reported to have made it clear he does not want any official confirmation of his next destination until his nation's tournament has concluded. This places the timeframe between now and the World Cup final on 19 July, reports the Mirror.

Nunez's Liverpool Legacy

Nunez's spell at Liverpool featured its fair share of highs and lows. Upon his departure from the club, his record stood at 40 goals and 26 assists across 143 appearances. He also left Anfield as a Premier League and League Cup winner.

However, having arrived from Benfica during the summer of 2022 in a transfer valued at roughly £75m, expectations were sky-high following his impressive form, where he'd netted 48 goals and provided 16 assists in 85 outings for the Portuguese side.

Newcastle's Alternative Targets

Newcastle will likely have to scour the market for more striking options. Eddie Howe's side are short on numbers in the attacking areas, having sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69m.

Real Betis wide-man Abde Ezzalzouli has also been linked with a move to St. James' Park. However, Newcastle are understood to be close to signing Osasuna ace Victor Munoz.

He is interested in representing the Magpies, but transfer negotiations have been somewhat complicated as a result of Real Madrid, who sold him to Osasuna, demanding a buyback clause in any deal which may bring him to St. James' Park.
