Coventry City are preparing to smash their transfer record with a £20million move for goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. The former Swansea City loanee has been a standout performer for the Sky Blues, playing a key role in their promotion to the Premier League under Frank Lampard.
Rushworth's Impact at Coventry
The 24-year-old kept 17 clean sheets during the Championship season, earning the Golden Glove award. He also swept the board at Coventry's end-of-season awards ceremony. Now back at parent club Brighton, the Premier League newcomers are desperate to sign him permanently.
Transfer Record in Sight
Brighton value Rushworth at £20million. If Coventry meet that price, it would surpass their previous record of £7.7million for Haji Wright three years ago. Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs reported on Saturday that Coventry had placed a formal bid and were awaiting Brighton's response.
Agent's Stance
Rushworth is managed by former Coventry player Stephen Hunt, who emphasized the importance of playing time. "I am not one of those guys that likes my goalkeepers to sit on the bench," Hunt said on the 1904 Club podcast. "If he's going to go somewhere in the Premier League, he has to play."
Time at Swansea City
Rushworth spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Swansea City, where he was named both supporters' player of the year and players' player of the year. He quickly became a fans' favourite and expressed a desire to return permanently. "When I go back down to Brighton, it's going to be one of those conversations that I am going to have," he said at the time. "If the opportunity presents itself, I could potentially come back."
With multiple Premier League clubs monitoring Rushworth, Coventry face competition, but the player is open to signing permanently with the Sky Blues.
