Beefeater, the 52-year-old steakhouse chain, will close all 106 remaining UK locations on September 10, 2026. Parent company Whitbread announced a complete exit from the standalone restaurant sector, also shutting sister brands Brewers Fayre, Bar + Block, and Table Table.
Whitbread blames government policy
Chief executive Dominic Paul directly attributed the closure to substantial cost pressures from government policy, including recent increases in employer National Insurance contributions and business rates, which he said made the traditional pub-restaurant model 'unsustainable'. Whitbread will now focus exclusively on its Premier Inn hotel operation.
The shutdown is part of a £250 million restructuring programme. Around 600 new Premier Inn rooms will be created within converted restaurant premises. Many former Beefeaters will become smaller, integrated kitchens serving only hotel guests, no longer open to the public. Locations that do not meet hotel profitability standards will be sold or leased.
3,800 jobs at risk
The restructuring affecting Beefeater and Brewers Fayre puts 3,800 jobs in jeopardy across the UK and Ireland. Whitbread has started consultations and says it aims to safeguard positions by relocating staff into alternative roles within its hotel operations.

Following the announcement, many Brits shared memories online. One person wrote: 'Until I went to university the only restaurant I'd ever been to was a Beefeater. We'd go for various family birthdays. I absolutely loved it. A steak or a mixed grill which I never got at home, followed by a Knickerbocker Glory. Fantastic times. I went back a couple of years ago. The place looked run down. I feel sad about this but I guess the fact I hadn't been to one for 30 years is part of the problem.'
Another added: 'When I was first working away from home, we did events work and the big treat was a Beefeater on the last night. It was genuinely an event.' A third commented: 'My favourite restaurant when I was little, the one in Bath specifically. But I haven’t been to one in years.'
Loyalty scheme ends
The Beefeater Reward Club will officially end on August 31, 2026.
