Liverpool legend John Barnes has warned new head coach Andoni Iraola against signing any players from his former club Bournemouth, insisting none would improve the current squad. Speaking to Betfred, Barnes stated: "There’s no Bournemouth player I’d like to see him bring to Anfield with him because I don’t think there’s a Bournemouth player who’s better than what we already have."
Iraola's Appointment and Early Transfer Activity
Iraola was appointed as Liverpool head coach last month, replacing Arne Slot, who was sacked just 12 months after leading the club to their record-equalling 20th league title. The Spaniard left Bournemouth at the end of last season after guiding them to European qualification for the first time in their history. Liverpool have already made their first signing under Iraola, capturing Spain international forward Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34.5 million.
Links to Bournemouth's Alex Scott
Liverpool continue to be linked with several players, including Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott. However, Barnes dismissed the idea, saying: "Alex Scott is somebody that’s trusted by Andoni Iraola, but I think the only reason he’d arrive at the club would be solely due to the manager." He added: "Iraola understands him and if Arne Slot was still the manager, and he’s a different manager to Andoni, then maybe he’d have been less suited."
Barnes' Verdict on Bournemouth Talent
Barnes, a Liverpool icon, believes the Reds already possess superior talent in every position compared to Bournemouth's squad. His comments come as Liverpool look to rebuild after a disappointing recent campaign, with Iraola tasked with restoring the club to its former glory. The warning serves as a reminder that transfers should be based on quality rather than managerial familiarity.
