Barnes: Gakpo Should Stay, but Wirtz Can Replace Him

Liverpool legend John Barnes has weighed in on the future of Cody Gakpo, urging the Dutch forward to stay at Anfield while suggesting that an 'improved' Florian Wirtz could render his departure unnecessary. Speaking to Betfred, Barnes expressed confidence in Liverpool's attacking depth despite ongoing speculation about Gakpo's exit.

Liverpool's Forward Overhaul

The Reds are reshaping their forward line this summer following Mohamed Salah's departure, a long-term injury to Hugo Ekitike, and uncertainty over Federico Chiesa's future. Liverpool have already secured Spain international Victor Munoz from Osasuna for £34.5 million and continue to assess right-wing options after seemingly losing the race for RB Leipzig's Yan Diomande.

Gakpo, who scored only nine goals for Liverpool last season compared to five in six games for the Netherlands after the domestic campaign, has been linked with a move away. However, Barnes is not keen on seeing him leave.

Barnes Backs Wirtz

Barnes is convinced that Florian Wirtz, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen for £116 million last summer, will prove to be a success after a difficult debut season. 'We've already got the likes of Wirtz, Ekitike, and Alexander Isak, as well as Rio Ngumoha coming through now, so I think we're okay from an attacking perspective,' Barnes said. 'But I would like Cody to stay because he's a very good player and he won the league with us.'

He added: 'There's a lot of speculation, but I don't think we're lacking from an attacking perspective. If somebody was to leave, then I think we will see the emergence of an improved Florian Wirtz next season because I believe he's a fantastic player. I don't want to see Cody go, but if he did, then I don't believe we'd have to replace him.'

Gakpo's Future Uncertain

Despite Barnes's support, Gakpo's future remains uncertain amid interest from other clubs. The Dutch international's disappointing goal tally last season has fueled speculation, though his international form suggests he remains a potent threat. Liverpool's attacking reinforcements, including Munoz and the potential emergence of Wirtz, could provide cover if Gakpo departs.

Barnes's comments underscore the club's depth, with young talents like Ngumoha also breaking through. As Liverpool navigate a transitional summer, the decisions on Gakpo and Wirtz will shape their attack for the coming season.
