Barcelona are reportedly preparing to rival Arsenal for the signature of Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, with the Catalan giants having already made contact with their domestic counterparts over a potential summer move.
The 26-year-old Argentine, who left Manchester City for Atletico in 2024, has been consistently linked with a return to the Premier League. Arsenal are known to be among his many suitors, but Barcelona have now emerged as serious contenders after head coach Hansi Flick requested a new number nine for next season.
Barcelona's ambitious approach
According to reports, Barcelona have already reached out to Atletico to gauge their willingness to sell Alvarez, who remains under contract until 2030. While his release clause is set at a staggering €500m (£432.9m), the La Liga champions are prepared to offer a deal worth €95m (£82.2m) including add-ons.
Barcelona's financial struggles have been well documented, and they are currently operating just outside La Liga's financial fair play regulations. However, the club hopes to move within the league's rules this summer, which could facilitate a larger spend. Alvarez's willingness to transfer could also aid negotiations.
Atletico's counter-strategy
Atletico Madrid, however, are in a strong bargaining position. They are willing to counteract any proposals by offering Alvarez a lucrative new contract until 2032, aiming to keep him at the club despite mounting interest. The striker is viewed as a key asset, having scored consistently since his arrival from City.
Barcelona see Alvarez as the ideal long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski, who turns 38 later this year. The club scouted Alvarez during his time at River Plate and have admired him for years. Partnering him with Raphinha and Lamine Yamal is seen as a way to rejuvenate their attack.
Arsenal's interest remains
Arsenal's interest in Alvarez first emerged in January, and the Gunners are expected to renew their pursuit in the summer. The north London club signed Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon for a significant fee last summer, but the Swede has faced scrutiny over his tally of 12 goals in 32 Premier League appearances and his overall performances.
Manager Mikel Arteta has yet to fully integrate Gyokeres, with Kai Havertz often preferred in key matches, including the recent clash with title rivals Manchester City. Adding Alvarez would provide a significant boost to Arsenal's firepower as they aim to challenge for the Premier League title.
With Barcelona now entering the race, the battle for Alvarez's signature is set to intensify. Both clubs are prepared to invest heavily, but Atletico's strong negotiating position and the player's long-term contract mean any deal will be complex.
