Asda Hale Barns to Close July 31, Waitrose to Take Over

Asda has confirmed that its Hale Barns store will close on July 31, 2026, just two years after opening. The 11,000-square-foot supermarket will be replaced by a Waitrose, which is expected to open in autumn 2026.

Closure Details and Timeline

The closure was announced in May 2026, with July 31 set as the final day of trading. An Asda spokesperson stated that the decision followed regular assessments of the company's store portfolio to ensure it meets customer needs and remains commercially sustainable.

Customers are advised to use nearby Asda superstores in Altrincham and Wythenshawe, or shop online at Asda.com.

Staff Transition and New Opportunities

Asda staff at the Hale Barns location will transfer to Waitrose Partners. They will receive fresh training ahead of the new store opening, which is expected to create new roles.

Waitrose Expansion in the North

David Donovan, Waitrose Regional Manager, told Altrincham Today: “Opening in Hale Barns is an exciting opportunity for Waitrose and we’ll offer the very best products and customer service for food lovers in the area. As part of this, we’re building a brilliant team and we look forward to welcoming them and our customers in the coming months. We’ll be sharing more details on our plans soon.”

Alun Jones, Waitrose’s Head of Physical Estate, added: "Growing our presence in the north is important to us and the Hale Barns store is a significant next step in our plan. Alongside our stores in Altrincham and Wilmslow, Hale Barns is a great fit for our brand."
