Mayonnaise is a staple condiment in UK kitchens, used in sandwiches, with chips, and on salads. With many own-brand options cheaper than branded Hellmann's, a taste test compared offerings from Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury's, Asda, Tesco, and Marks and Spencer to see if any could match Hellmann's in flavour and value.
Results Overview
The test ranked mayonnaises from worst to best. Tesco's came last with a 2/10 rating, while Asda's won with a perfect 10/10. Aldi's tied with Hellmann's at 8/10, and Marks and Spencer's scored 9/10.
Tesco – 86p
Tesco's mayonnaise was rated 2/10. The tester thought something was off with its flavour, finding it far too vinegary, which overpowered all other tastes.
Lidl – 95p
Lidl's sauce was the whitest and tasted sour, scoring 3/10. It was nice and creamy but lacked flavour.
Sainsbury's – 89p
Sainsbury's mayonnaise was the thickest and quite light in colour. It had a pleasant strength and flavour, earning a 6/10. Ideal for topping salads if you prefer a thick mayonnaise.
Hellmann's – £2.75 (Tesco)
Hellmann's is a much-loved branded option for good reason. It is creamy with a nice balance between sweet and tangy, and has a good consistency. It scored 8/10.
Aldi – 95p
Aldi's mayonnaise was deemed identical in taste to Hellmann's, with the same creaminess and flavour balance. It scored 8/10 and is a great cheaper alternative to the branded product.
Marks and Spencer – £1.20
Marks and Spencer's own-brand mayonnaise came second with a 9/10. It tasted very different from the others but in a good way: light, airy, with a pleasant tang and creaminess. Best for those wanting a lighter, not-too-thick mayonnaise.
Asda – 96p
Asda's mayonnaise won the taste test with a 10/10. Its colour, creaminess, and smooth texture stood out. It had a satisfying tang expected from mayonnaise and is much cheaper than Hellmann's, making it the winner.
