Airdrieonians manager John Rankin has declined to comment on speculation linking the club with a move for former Motherwell and Scotland defender Declan Gallagher. The 34-year-old centre-back is a free agent after leaving Ross County at the end of last season.
Gallagher Linked with Player-Coach Role
Reports have suggested that Gallagher has held talks over a potential player-coach role at New Broomfield. Rankin, who took over as Airdrie boss last month, has yet to appoint an assistant manager or backroom team. When asked about the rumours, Rankin told Lanarkshire Live Sport: "I have been linked with a number of experienced and good players over the last few weeks. It is good for us to be linked with these kinds of players and it shows we are appealing to players. But, right now, I won't speak about players who are out of contract and who we may or may not be interested in."
Respect for Gallagher but No Confirmation
Rankin added: "I have a lot of respect for players like Declan, who have done a lot in the game. But I won't get tied up in talking about what they could do or not do for the club." The Diamonds boss remained tight-lipped, refusing to confirm or deny any interest in the former St Mirren, Dundee United and Aberdeen man.
New Signing: Henry James Arrives
Rankin did bolster his squad on Friday with the arrival of left-back Henry James, following his exit from Hearts. James played in yesterday's 2-1 friendly defeat at Ayr United. The 22-year-old impressed during a trial period and has signed a contract with the League One side.
Rankin Avoids Hamilton Accies Controversy
Rankin was also asked about the ongoing controversy at his former club, Hamilton Accies, where rival clubs have expressed anger and frustration over Hamilton's spending on players while allegedly failing to fulfil financial obligations related to pension contributions. However, Rankin declined to be drawn on the subject, saying: "I don't want to comment on other clubs' business."
