As autumn arrives, the days get shorter and cooler, but your lawn may still need regular attention before winter sets in. Knowing when to give your grass its final mow of the year can help keep it healthy and looking neat through the colder months. But cutting it too early could leave the grass overgrown, while mowing too late could damage the lawn when the ground is cold and wet.
The key is to wait for the right conditions rather than sticking to a particular date. According to lawn experts, timing the last cut depends on the condition of the grass and the weather.
October Is the Typical Time for the Last Cut
The Grass People said: “One thing for certain is that the last cut is never at the same time in Edinburgh as it is in Newquay, and it will be different everywhere in between.”
The experts said the last mow tends to be in October, but the exact month depends on a variety of conditions. They said: “October is when the temperature begins to drop, and grass growth slows down, indicating that the time for the final run with the mower is approaching.”
Tips for the Final Mow
“When the time does come for the final outing with the lawn mower, there are a few things to keep in mind,” the experts added. “Firstly, remove and rake away leaves and other debris from your lawn. Raise and keep the lawnmower blades at their highest point. Aim only to trim the top of the grass blades. Don’t scalp the lawn. Avoid cutting on a frosty or overly wet day.”
If your region is mild, you may be able to wait and top the grass in November, but for most, the best time is late October, to avoid missing the chance for a final trim.
After the Last Mow
You’ll know when it’s time to give the lawn its final mow when you notice growth from September has slowed down, and the weather is getting colder. After the last mow, apply an autumn lawn fertiliser to keep it “protected and nurtured” through the harsh winter weather. You can opt for a slow-releasing one, which will strengthen the grass roots, or a quick-release one, which will provide coverage to help your lawn fend off frost.
