A uPVC specialist has shared a simple trick to help keep bathroom windows clearer and reduce the risk of mould: wiping a tiny amount of washing-up liquid over the glass.
How the trick works
Allan Reid, founder of Art Windows and Doors, explained that spreading a thin layer of washing-up liquid on the glass stops water droplets from forming. "Putting washing-up liquid on your window probably sounds a bit odd, but it can actually work quite well," he said. "You only need a tiny bit. Once you spread it over the glass, it leaves a really thin layer that helps stop all those little droplets from building up."
Reid warned against using too much: "You definitely don’t want to cover the window in washing-up liquid. Just put a tiny bit on a clean, dry cloth, rub it over the glass and then give it a good buff until it looks clear."
What to do
The method is straightforward: ensure the window is clean and dry, apply a small amount of washing-up liquid to a soft cloth, rub it over the glass, then buff with a clean cloth until clear. Using too much can leave smears.
Reid also recommended opening the window or using an extractor fan after showering, wiping away heavy condensation, and keeping the room ventilated. He noted that washing-up liquid is a short-term fix and won't stop condensation completely, as hot showers create a lot of moisture. It can also damage rubber seals around windows over time.
