A deep area of low pressure will bring persistent rain and gusty winds to much of Wales overnight on Monday, with coastal areas and higher ground facing the strongest gusts.
Despite the unsettled conditions, temperatures are expected to remain above average for the time of year for much of the week, with muggy conditions and highs of 20C possible in some parts of Wales by the end of the week.
Monday's damp start and overnight deterioration
Monday, October 12, is set to be damp and grey with drizzly spells for much of the morning, though it could brighten up in the afternoon and feel much milder than over the weekend.
According to the Met Office, the weather will take a turn for the worse overnight as a deepening area of low pressure to the northwest of the UK brings the prospect of gales along coasts and heavy rain. The downpours could see up to 32mm of rain fall in an hour, with gusts close to 40mph.
Timeline of rain bands and wind speeds
On Monday morning, repeated bands of rain will move across from the west, bringing showers across the south of the country. After a wet morning in the south, there will be a chance of brighter spells in the afternoon, though showers remain a risk across the whole country.
More rain will move in overnight, with the heaviest hitting Wales by dawn. After midnight, a first band of rain will begin to move across the country from the west, with heavy and persistent rain moving in from 5am onwards on Tuesday.
Strong winds will accompany the wet weather, with gusts close to 40mph forecast for the west coast, including Pembroke and Caernarfon. In Swansea and Cardiff, wind speeds are forecast to reach a maximum of 33mph.
Wettest morning of the week and forecast
Many will wake up to the wettest weather of the week on Tuesday morning, with up to 32mm of rain potentially falling in an hour in the hardest-hit areas. The band of rain will have moved over into England after 8am.
The Met Office forecast for Tuesday states: "A wet and windy start as heavy rain sweeps eastwards. Despite the sunny spells, the afternoon will feel cooler than on Monday with a fresh, gusty breeze following the rain. Maximum temperature 17C."
