Homeowners across the UK are being urged to keep their windows closed from 7pm onwards over the next four weeks. Following this week's drop in temperatures after the recent heatwave, Britain is heading into a spell of cooler weather. With autumn fast approaching, spider season is upon us, and house spiders are on the prowl.
As the evenings begin to close in, these eight-legged intruders start searching for warmth inside our homes. Experts are cautioning that it's not just the common house spider you need to be wary of. The noble false widow spider (Steatoda nobilis) is becoming ever more prevalent in British households.
Rising prevalence of false widows
While bites are uncommon, they can trigger symptoms akin to a bee or wasp sting, including pain, swelling, and in certain cases, fever, reports the Manchester Evening News. Alan Reid, a windows specialist at Art Windows and Doors, warns that the next four weeks are critical.
"Male house spiders and false widows are on the move, and homes with open windows are at risk of infestation. Now is the time to seal gaps and shut windows before spider season peaks," Alan advises. By taking straightforward precautions now, Brits can embrace the autumn season without unwanted eight-legged guests creeping into their homes.
How to keep spiders out
Close your windows in the evening, as spiders venture indoors at dusk. Shutting windows from 7pm onwards remains the most straightforward line of defence. It is also recommended that you seal any gaps and cracks. Check doors, windows, and vents for openings and apply weather stripping or sealant to block potential entry points.
Utilise natural repellents such as peppermint, tea tree, or lavender essential oils mixed with water to deter spiders and spray around likely entry points. Finally, keep your house clean, as regular dusting and vacuuming removes hiding spots and food sources.
What to do if you spot a false widow
First and foremost, remain calm, as they are not aggressive and will only bite if provoked. Remove them humanely by using the "glass and paper" method to trap and release them outside.
In the worst case scenario, should you be bitten, most bites cause localised pain and swelling. Cleanse the affected area, apply a cold compress, and seek medical attention if symptoms deteriorate.
