Two people have died on the Greek island of Salamina after twin fires broke out near Athens on Sunday. More than 500 people were evacuated from their homes and left the island by sea following high wildfire risk alerts.
Fires and fatalities
The first fire was reported at around 2.40pm near the south coast, with a separate fire starting 20 minutes later in the east. Greek fire officials confirmed that firefighters attending the blaze found two bodies at the scene. The cause of both fires remains unknown.
UK Foreign Office advice
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has offered advice for Brits travelling to Greece this summer, noting that "there is a high risk of wildfires during the summer season from April to October." The FCDO urges people to ensure their mobile phone is registered to receive emergency alerts, allowing the Greek government’s Emergency Communication Service alerts to reach them. In Greece, causing a forest fire or wildfire is a criminal offence, even if unintentional.
Prevention and safety measures
To avoid starting wildfires, the FCDO advises: do not leave litter, especially glass which is known to start fires; make sure cigarettes are properly extinguished; and do not light barbecues. If you are in or near an area affected by wildfires, the FCDO recommends following @112Greece for official updates, following the guidance of the emergency services, calling the Greek emergency services on 112 if in immediate danger, and contacting your airline or travel operator for assistance with return travel to the UK.
