A mature wild cherry tree, approximately 40ft (12 metres) tall, fell in Adamsdown, Cardiff, blocking two streets and bringing down overhead cables. The incident occurred on Eclipse Street and System Street, with residents' internet affected for four hours.
Tree blocks streets and damages cables
The tree fell across the carriageway and footway, damaging two BT overhead cables. Cardiff council was contacted at 7.15pm, and a team of three arborists was deployed immediately. Due to the complexity of the operation, the team remained on site until around 11pm to safely remove the tree.
A BT engineer then attended to isolate and make the affected cables safe. One girl sustained minor injuries after riding her bike into the fallen tree, but no other injuries were reported.
Council responds and roads reopened
A Cardiff council spokesperson said: "At 7.15pm yesterday (August 13) evening, the council received a report of a fallen tree blocking Eclipse Street and System Street in Adamsdown. The council’s arboricultural team responded, and a team of three arborists was deployed immediately."
The spokesperson added: "The tree, a mature Wild Cherry (Prunus avium) approximately 12 metres tall, had fallen across the carriageway and footway, bringing down two BT overhead cables. Due to the complexity of the operation, the team remained on site until around 11pm to safely remove the tree. A BT engineer then attended to isolate and make the affected cables safe."
The council continued: "While on-site, a member of staff was approached by a young girl who said she had scraped her knee after riding her bike into the fallen tree, but no other injuries were reported to the council and while removing the hazard, there were no emergency services vehicles present on-site."
Once the tree was cleared and the utilities secured, the road and footway were reopened. The site was left in a safe condition, and the council thanked residents for their patience while the work was carried out.
