Temperatures across the North East are set to fall overnight, with some areas plunging to 3C. Latest Met Office maps show how the mercury will drop on Wednesday night and into the early hours of Thursday.
Frost is likely in rural places as the weather turns more autumnal. The maximum temperature during the day will be 13C, but it will be much colder overnight across the region.
Overnight temperature drop
Met Office meteorologist Kathryn Chalk said: “Wednesday, it’s going to be feeling cooler, highs of 16C/17C in the south, highs of 13C or 14C in the north. Overnight Wednesday into Thursday, that’s when we will have that real autumnal feel, widespread single figures to start Thursday morning.”
According to the maps, the temperature will drop to single figures from 9pm on Wednesday, October 7. Newcastle, Ashington and Sunderland will be at 9C, while Hexham and Consett will be at 8C, with Haltwhistle at 7C.
It continues to fall, reaching 3C in Haltwhistle at 3am on Thursday morning, October 8. At that time, Newcastle, Ashington and Sunderland are showing 7C, and Hexham and Consett are slightly lower at 6C.
Cold start to Thursday
It remains cold in the early hours, with Hexham dropping to 5C and Haltwhistle staying at 3C between 5am and 7am. Temperatures gradually begin to rise from 9am on Thursday, back in double figures by 11am, when Newcastle will reach 11C. However, during the day on Thursday, it won't get higher than 13C.

Wednesday: Any lingering rain soon clearing to the southeast. Then generally fine and dry, though isolated showers may develop in the afternoon. Brisk coastal winds developing. Temperatures near normal. Maximum temperature 13°C.
Wednesday night: Cloudy with showers, though cloud will clear overnight inland and temperatures will fall and could see a frost in rural places. Staying cloudy along the coast with isolated showers. Minimum temperature 3°C.
Thursday: Fine day Thursday after a chilly start with rural frost, chance of a coastal shower during the morning. Becoming cloudy during the afternoon before rain and stronger winds overnight. Maximum temperature 13°C.
Friday to Sunday: Windy Friday and Saturday, with brighter spells and also outbreaks of rain and showers. Becoming drier and more settled on Sunday.
