Mould vanishes from bathroom edges with 2 basic items – no scrubbing

A cleaning influencer has shared a budget-friendly technique that removes black mould from bathroom sealant without any scrubbing, using just household bleach and kitchen roll.

The method, posted by Afelias Kitchen on TikTok, involves dampening kitchen roll or paper towels and pressing them firmly onto the mould-affected areas so they are fully covered. A generous amount of standard household bleach is then poured over the towels so the damp paper can absorb the solution thoroughly.

Overnight treatment

The towels are left in place overnight, and by morning the area should look as good as new. Anyone using bleach is advised to keep the bathroom thoroughly ventilated throughout the night, shutting the door to the rest of the home while leaving the windows fully open.

Afelia said: "Sharing this simple hack which can tackle mould growth on your sealant temporarily - we had a flood underneath our shower room a while back and the excess damp caused the sealant to go mouldy in such a bad way, I needed a quick and cost-effective solution and this 100% worked!"

Not a permanent fix

The influencer stressed that this is a quick fix, not a permanent solution for recurring mould. If the problem persists, the sealant should be replaced and the underlying cause addressed to prevent it from worsening.

Additional tips to avoid bathroom mould include running the extractor fan during showers and for 15–30 minutes after, ventilating daily by opening a window or keeping the door ajar, and wiping wet surfaces with a squeegee or cloth after use. Towels and bathmats should be dried quickly in a better-ventilated space, and the bathroom kept warmer to reduce condensation on cold surfaces.

Regularly cleaning grout and sealant, wiping down condensation hotspots like windowsills and corners, and fixing leaks such as dripping taps or cracked grout can also help stop mould from taking hold.
