The Met Office has said certain areas of the UK could see temperatures plunge by up to 9C overnight as a cold front moves through.
In a fresh update on X, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday afternoon, the national weather service said: "It might feel rather warm out there for some today, but temperatures will start to drop from tomorrow. With a cold front moving through, less humid and cooler air moving through from the north. Some places in the south could be up to 9° Celsius lower than today."
Which areas will be affected?
An accompanying weather chart shows that regions including parts of Yorkshire will experience substantial temperature drops within a 24-hour period.
In its UK five-day weather outlook, the Met Office notes that conditions overall will be "changeable and turning cooler".
Rain and chilly nights ahead
This evening, Tuesday, rainfall is expected to gradually extend across England and Wales, becoming heavy in places. Scotland and Northern Ireland are likely to be "chilly" with patchy frost possible.
On Wednesday, October 7, heavy rainfall will steadily progress eastwards across England and Wales. Sunny intervals and scattered showers are forecast for Northern Ireland and Scotland, with conditions "turning cooler across the UK".
Outlook for the rest of the week
The prediction for Thursday through to Saturday, October 8-10, reads: "Changeable over the next few days with spells of rain at times or heavy showers. Some drier and brighter intervals too, and feeling cooler than of late."
Conditions are then expected to be "likely be quite changeable through the middle of October". Occasional spells of rain and strong winds are anticipated, broken up by brighter and more showery periods, particularly across the north and north-west of the UK.
The Met Office noted that rainfall will be most persistent over western hills, with the north-west set to bear the brunt of the wet weather.
