The Met Office has issued a yellow severe weather warning for parts of Scotland as strong winds of up to 70mph are forecast to hit the UK this week. The warning covers Na h-Eileanan Siar and Highland from 10am until 7pm on Wednesday, October 14.
Gales expected in northwest England and Scotland
On Wednesday, gales are expected in the northwest, with the strongest winds likely around the middle of the day. The Met Office has warned that gusts could reach 50 to 60mph, and perhaps as high as 70mph across the far northwest.
Met Office weather maps show wind gusts as high as 66mph in parts of Scotland on Wednesday. In Greater Manchester, wind gusts are forecast to reach around 30mph.
Travel disruption and safety advice
In the areas affected by the yellow wind warning, there could be delays to road, air and ferry transport, some bus and train services affected, delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges, and some short-term loss of power and other services is possible.
The Met Office has shared advice on social media ahead of the windy weather, urging people to listen out for travel updates, give more room to vulnerable road users and stay back from stormy seas. The agency also warns: "Remember to keep room either side of your vehicle when passing lorries or caravans to allow for them being blown sideways." It continues: "National Highways also advise keeping good control of your vehicle by using both hands on the steering wheel."
Weather outlook for rest of week
For much of England and Wales on Wednesday, it is expected to remain dry and bright, with winds strengthening from the west. Rain will reach the Western Isles, Scotland, in the early afternoon before spreading into Northern Ireland and western Scotland. Eastern England should hold on to some late sunshine, with temperatures reaching the high teens.
The band of rain will move slowly southwards through Wednesday night and Thursday, October 15. Northern Ireland and northern England can expect wet weather during the morning, with some heavier downpours possible. Looking ahead to the long-range forecast for the UK, covering October 18 to 27, the Met Office has warned of some "frosty mornings" in parts of the country. High pressure is expected to lie close to or across the UK through much of this period, bringing largely fine and dry weather for many, perhaps with some overnight mist and fog patches. Weak frontal systems could bring some rain from the west, and showers may spread in from eastern coasts at times. Winds are expected to be mostly light, with temperatures likely around normal for the time of year.
