The Met Office has pinpointed the day thunderstorms are expected to arrive in Liverpool this week, with heavy rain and strong winds also forecast across Merseyside. The unsettled conditions mark a shift from the scorching summer, as the UK prepares for the bank holiday weekend.
Thursday's forecast for Liverpool
In its day-by-day outlook, the forecaster shows thunderstorms will hit Liverpool on Thursday, August 27, accompanied by strong winds and rain. The forecast states: "Changeable weather with spells of heavy rain, some thunderstorms and strong winds. Brighter intervals and scattered showers at times. Temperatures mostly near normal, feeling warm and humid in places."
Before that, Tuesday (August 25) is expected to stay mostly dry, with spells of warm sunshine and light to moderate easterly winds. The Met Office said: "Staying mostly dry, with spells of warm sunshine and light to moderate easterly winds. Low cloud over the hills to start but will lift into the afternoon. Best of the sunshine will be by late afternoon. Feeling warm. Maximum temperature 24C."
Midweek outlook and temperatures
Wednesday (August 26) will bring isolated light showers feeding up from the south, though most places should stay dry with some bright spells. The Met Office noted: "Isolated light showers continue to feed up from the south, but most places staying dry and seeing some bright spells into the afternoon. Staying warm and humid. Maximum temperature 24C."
Temperatures across Liverpool are set to peak at 24C on Tuesday, 23C on Wednesday and Thursday, before easing to 20C from Friday through Sunday, and 18C on Monday, August 31.
Bank holiday weekend outlook
Looking ahead to the weekend, the Met Office warned of an unsettled start to the period, with showers or longer spells of rain possible across many parts of the UK. It added: "Some heavy rain is likely, perhaps with some thunderstorms too. It will likely remain changeable into early September, with rainfall amounts probably above average for the time year and the potential for some strong winds at times."
