The Met Office has forecast heavy rainfall for 153 areas on Saturday, with a band of rain sweeping in from the southwest in the early hours and moving up the country throughout the day. Weather warnings are in place for the bank holiday weekend.
Rain begins in the southwest
From 9am onwards, the soggy conditions will begin in Cornwall, spreading across the region throughout the day and getting heavier. By lunchtime, the showers will have travelled slightly northeastward before covering the majority of the south, Midlands and much of the north later into the evening.
This includes areas of London, Reading and Brighton at around 3.45pm. In the East Midlands, Nottingham, Leicester and Loughborough are also expected to be soaked ahead of the evening.
Forecast for the rest of the weekend
The whole of the UK should brace for a spell of rainfall at some point over the long weekend, with the Met Office forecasting "heavy rain" that "moves east across England and Wales" on Saturday. Later in the day, brighter conditions follow in the south with heavy, possibly thundery showers.
The rain will then move north, reaching Manchester and Sheffield by 8pm. However, for the majority of the day, Scotland is expected to remain dry. The low-pressure system brings widespread rain with the weather maps changing a red colour at times, showing heavy rainfall.
The rain should begin to ease overnight, offering some areas a relatively drier spell on Saturday evening before the next band moves in on Sunday. The forecast for Sunday says: "Sunshine and showers for Sunday, some heavy and thundery, with rain moving east later."
The Met Office adds: "Monday sees drier conditions developing southwards, though further rain possible."
