Met Office maps show when it will next rain in Wales

Rain is set to return to Wales this week after drought was declared across the country. The spring and summer have been exceptionally hot, with multiple weather records broken and heatwaves causing parched landscapes and contributing to wildfires.

However, the land and waterways across Wales will see a much-needed return of rain this week, with heavy showers forecast for parts of the country. In most areas, the rainfall will appear overnight, but drizzle and showers are expected throughout the week.

Rain on Monday and Tuesday

North Wales and small areas across the rest of the country will see rain in the early afternoon today before drying up once again. The Met Office forecast for Monday, August 17 states: "Today: Low cloud and drizzle quickly lifting to brighter skies, with plenty of hazy spells of sunshine developing. An isolated light shower or two may be possible, mainly during the afternoon. Feeling warm and muggy, with light winds. Maximum temperature 25 °C."

"Tonight: Cloud increasing from the north during the evening, with a period of heavy rain moving southwards by late evening and during the early hours. Staying cloudy and damp until dawn."

The weather so far in 2026 has seen drastic contrasts, as South Wales saw rain every day in January before the country hit its hottest spring on record, followed by the driest July on record for 140 years. While temperatures will remain warm, it will feel a "little cooler" in Wales.

Heavy showers later in the week

A band of rain will hit Wales westward, covering South Wales and Mid Wales as well as Wrexham by 10.30pm on Tuesday night. Showers will be heavy in some places throughout the day on Thursday, with dry weather returning ahead of the weekend.

The Met Office forecast for the rest of the week states: "Tuesday: Brightening up, after a cloudy and damp start, with sunny spells and a scattering of light showers. Feeling a little cooler, but still pleasant in the sunnier moments. Maximum temperature 23 °C."

"Outlook for Wednesday to Friday: Sunny spells and showers expected throughout this period. Some of the showers will be heavy and times, with the risk of hail and thunder. A fresh feel for all."
