Liverpool John Lennon Airport is continuing to warn passengers about an 'amber alert' as major roadworks could add significant time to drivers' journeys. A prominent notice on the airport's website highlights the ongoing scheme, which is set to cause disruption for many months.
M62 slip road closed until Spring 2027
The notice reads: "There are major roadworks taking place that may cause delays when travelling to/from the airport for some drivers. The eastbound exit slip at Jn6 on the M62 is completely closed until Spring 2027 with a diversion in place via Jn7 on the M62."
Knowsley Council has confirmed that the extensive works form part of a substantial investment initiative aimed at improving traffic flow and cutting journey times at this critical junction, which serves as a key component of the Liverpool City Region's road network.
Extra capacity and wider roundabout planned
The scheme will deliver additional capacity and reduce travel times by increasing the number of approach lanes leading to the roundabout, as well as widening the roundabout itself.
Council bosses said: "All possible steps are being taken to minimise disruption but there will be some unavoidable delays to journeys. Drivers are advised to plan ahead, allow extra time for travel, or choose alternative routes where possible."
The scheme includes further phases of works, with an estimated final completion date of January 2027. Millions of passengers travel through LJLA each year. Some 650,000 used the airport in August of this year, marking the busiest month in its history.
