An earthquake in southern Italy has left eight people injured and crushed dozens of cars under falling boulders.
The magnitude 4.7 quake struck the Campi Flegrei area near Naples at a depth of 3km at around 7:46pm on Friday night. Aftershocks were felt throughout the night, and it was one of the strongest seismic events in the region's history.
Boulders smash into residential streets
Large rocks broke away from cliffs and tumbled into streets in residential areas, destroying parked cars. Emergency services were called to the scene as residents left their homes and took to the streets as dust clouds billowed into the air.
The quake triggered power outages in the area and brought transport to a standstill. Some buildings in and around Naples suffered minor damage, Italy's fire service said.
Italy's seismic history
The Campi Flegrei region has seen increased seismic activity in recent years, with frequent small earthquakes. Earthquakes are relatively common across Italy.
In 2016, a series of quakes destroyed parts of Lazio, Umbria and the Marche regions, killing around 300 people. In November 1980, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck the Irpinia area of southern Italy, killing about 2,700 people.
