Capsized boat missing near River Tyne mouth sparks warning

A 14ft cabin cruiser capsized near the mouth of the River Tyne on Saturday, August 15, and has not been found since. The three crew members were rescued from the water and taken to a waiting ambulance, according to South Shields Volunteer Life Brigade (SSVLB) and Tynemouth RNLI lifeboat.

Vessel Lost From Sight

The white cruiser, which has a brown stripe, was reported to have capsized shortly before 3pm. The crew were wearing lifejackets and used a VHF radio to call for help. After the rescue, the vessel was lost from sight, and its present position and condition are unknown.

Harbour Master's Warning

Port of Tyne Harbour Master Greg Maitland has issued advice for mariners to take extra caution in the Seaward Approaches to the River Tyne. He said: "Following the capsize, the vessel has subsequently been lost from sight and its present position and condition are unknown. It is probable that the vessel has sunk; however, the possibility that it remains submerged or partially submerged cannot be excluded and may therefore present a hazard to navigation."

Any sightings of the vessel, floating wreckage, or debris should be reported immediately, along with position and relevant information. Reports of oil, fuel, or other pollution should be made to Tyne VTS on VHF Channel 12 or by telephone on 0191 427 8143.
